On February 12, 2019, Representative Batchelor appeared before a joint hearing of the DC Council's Committee of the Whole and Education Committee to discuss Ward 8's hopes and vision for the next Chancellor of DC Public Schools. The Council is preparing to consider the nomination of Dr. Lewis Ferebee as the next leader of DC's public education system.
Through an online survey and a town hall meeting conducted on October 4, 2018, DC State Board of Education Representative Markus Batchelor and the Ward 8 Education Council solicited feedback from students, teachers, families, staff, administrators, youth service providers and other concerned neighbors about their vision for the qualities and experience of our next Chancellor for DC Public Schools.
The search for the next Chancellor of DC Public Schools began on June 28, 2018 with Mayor Muriel Bowser’s announcement of the formation of the Our Schools Leadership Committee, billed as a “review panel” to “assist the Mayor during the search process”. Since, a series of public conversations and engagement has taken place to encourage Washingtonians to let their voices be heard on the selection.
Representative Batchelor and the Ward 8 Education Council decided to convene a town hall meeting and collect feedback through an online survey to help shape Ward 8’s collective vision. The following report is a synopsis of this engagement.
The report will be submitted to Mayor Bowser, the members of the Our Schools Leadership Committee, members of Council of the District of Columbia, members of the DC State Board of Education and new Deputy Mayor for Education Paul Kihn. We will use this report as the blueprint for our advocacy efforts in the coming weeks and months as Mayor Bowser finalizes her choice and the Council begins hearings for their confirmation.
