Faking the Grade: DC State Board of Education member calls for investigation

November 30, 2017

WASHINGTON (ABC7) — Ballou High School is in the middle of a huge graduation scandal and now a parent is telling the 7 On Your Side I-Team issues at Ballou go much deeper.

Taunya Martin who has a junior at the school says “It's basically the kids we want them to be productive."

Martin says she's complained to the administration in the past about a lack of advance placement courses at the school and the high rate of teacher turn over.

Earlier this year, more than 20 teachers quit.

Martin adds “Lack of teachers and lack of these courses means you might not get into certain colleges.”

This comes on the heels of allegations that 26 students graduated from the high school with more than 100 absences last year.

Markus Batchelor, DC State Board of Education member representing Ballou High School and Ward 8 says “I am very concerned this is a system wide issue."

Batchelor confirmed Martins concerns about additional issues at the high school are real. He says the District not giving the State Board access to data for each school is causing many of these issues.

Batchelor says “I am calling for a system-wide investigation of data management across our system to see where we are failing our students and how we can do better. The residents of Ward 8 sent me to the board to get a honest deal for their children and their families and it's hard when you don't have access to the information that you need to make those decisions."

DC Public Schools told ABC 7 News it has no comment on Board Member Batchelor’s call for a District wide investigation.
